How to increase your Website's link popularity for high seo ranking.

Building links is one of the most important factors in getting top placements on the major search engines. Link building refers to the number and quality of the incoming links that are pointing to your site from other people's websites. These other sites consider your site important enough to linkto. So, in the engine's view, your site is considered important as well. Knowing who links to your site and increasing the number of quality links is an important part of any web site promotion effort. One of the most difficult areas of SEO is building link popularity.

What is Link Popularity?

Most of the major search engines now factor Link Popularity into their relevancy algorithms. As a result, increasing the number of quality, relevant sites which link to your site can actually improve your search engine rankings.

Link Popularity refers to the number of links pointing to your site from other sites on the Web.If your site has a lot of high quality sites linking to it, the search engines can assume it is a popular site and therefore should rank higher.

For example, say you sell landscaping and gardening supplies. Having a link placed on a web site for patios or home improvements will bring in traffic that is more likely to be interested in purchasing your product, than traffic that comes from a computer web site or a general links page.

The logic behind link popularity is broken down into two parts:

  • Quantity of Links - A link from page A to page B is a "vote" or "recommendation" for page B. Therefore it is logical to conclude that a webpage with 10,000 links pointing to it should be more relevant than one with only 10 links pointing to it. So try to get as many websites to link to yours as possible.
  • Quality of Links – A vote from an authoritative source should carry more weight than one from unknown source.

Types of links

There are two types of links you can establish on the web:

Reciprocal links

Link exchange is an easier way to establish links from other websites to your website. In link exchange process, you trade links with prospective partner sites by offering a link to their site from your own site. This method is a fast way to establish several hundred links to your website. However, it may not get you great benefits.

One-way links

To establish "only-incoming" links also called "one-way links" or "Non-Reciprocal links". Only incoming links are the links established on the other websites where you do not need to link back to them.

Effective ways to improve your Link Popularity Ratings

First, download Google Toolbar to look for page ranks of websites.

1. Seach Engines

The first way to increase your link popularity is to submit your url to major search engines Google, Yahoo!, MSN Live Search and Ask. It is vital that you let the search engines know your website exists. Because if they don't know your website exists, you have no hope of getting indexed by them. The most basic way of submitting to a search engine is visit a search engine's "submissions page" (add a site, submit URL, submit a site, etc.) and submit your website's URL.

2. Directory submissions

By using web directories you will be creating more links that point directly to your site and the raising your ranking in various search engines across the Internet. When you submit to web directories, the links you submit should not only lead to your site, but also should possess themed keywords within the links. The themed keywords will not only make your site easier to find, it will also increase the rating of your links in various search engines again getting more, free web traffic for you.

Therefore, it is a good idea to research the most popular keywords associated with your website theme before submitting your website to various web directories: the most popular keywords can make all of the difference in the world. To get people to click on your link, you should write a powerful description of your website. that motivates people to find out more about your website.

Find as many themed directories to submit to as possible. Make sure the directory is already in Google, has a good Page Rank.

  • Free Directories - Submitting to 500+ free directories will probably do nothing to help your website's rankings and may even hurt it. Stick to submitting to a few quality directories with high page ranks.
  • Paid Directories - Submit your site to paid directories. Google algorithm relies heavily on the authority of the websites linking to you. You will get the most value out of directory submissions by submitting to the best ones, rather than the cheapest ones. Yahoo! directory, ($299) which has a page rank of 8 is probably the easiest way to get an authority link to your website.
3. Link Baiting

This is the single most important method. It has mainly to do with good content in your site that gets links the natural way.

It means to create something that naturally attract backlinks for your web page by getting people to talk about it, discussing it on forums, blogging about it, posting it on del.icio.us/Furl/Digg/Shoutwire and linking to it from their sites. It also attracts a lot of visitors.

It is in content quality that a site's true potential shows through, and although search engines cannot measure the likelihood that users will enjoy a site, the vote via links system operates as a proxy for identifying the best content in a market. With great content, therefore, come great links and, ultimately, high rankings.

4. Pay Per Click (PPC)

Although there are several free marketing tools that you can use in promoting your products and your website, it is still highly recommended that you use paid advertising tools like PPC advertising as these can give you instant results. In addition, these can help you make your website and your ads highly visible on search page results so you can easily attract more qualified traffic to your website.

When people come to your site, regardless of the channel in which they found it, there is a possibility that they will link to you.

5. Reciprocal Link Exchanges

1. Find Websites That Advertise Reciprocal Link Exchanges. To find such sites, visit a search engine and search for: links "partners"

A great way to ensure that you are only linking to reciprocal sites is to put each link into a "temporary position" until you receive validation that the site is listing your business.

There are two excellent sites that allow you to shop for reciprocal link partners. When you find sites that are complementary, you add them to your "basket" and the link exchange websites sends out an automatic e-mail requesting the link. These two sites allow you to save time, while avoiding the "black hat" techniques that are prevalent among many automatic linking services. Try out www.linkmarket.net and www.gotop.com

2. Find Websites That Accept Site Submissions The second way to find websites to link to yours is to find sites that accept site submissions. To find such sites, visit a search engine and search for: links "add site", "submit a link", "Submit a URL", or "add a URL". Stay away from the link trading hubs and networks.

6. Link Building Based on Websites That Link To Your Competitors.

Looking at the links obtained by your top competitors and pursuing methods of your own to get listed on those sites/pages is an excellent way to stay competitive in the link building race

The best way to get other sites to link to yours is to ask them politely. To find out which websites are linking to your competitors, visit a search engine and enter, "link:" or "links:" followed by a competitor's domain name (with and without "www"). For example: link:yourcompetitor.com

At Yahoo!, the following searches can be used to find pages that link to other sites/pages: Linkdomain:url.com This command will show you all the pages that link to any page hosted at the domain url.com. Link:http://www.url.com/page.html This command will show only those pages which link directly to the specified page.

7. Local and Business Links

Get a link from your local chamber of commerce, trade associations, trade magazines and industry experts. Submit your link to relevant city and state governmental resources. List your site at the local library's Web site. See if your manufacturers or retailers or other business partners might be willing to link to your site.

8. Linking from your own web sites

This is an excellent way if you have many relevant pages in the same niche.

9. Article submission

Article marketing has recently become a very popular area of advertising, although it has probably always been effective.

What it entails is writing short, informative articles on the same topic as your book and including a link to your website at the end of the article. You then submit the articles to the various article submission directories. When you write an article and submit it to other website to post, they will generally link to your website from the page the article is on. Here’s a completely legitimate, relevant, and quality link to your site.

Write an article and have them submitted to article directories such as EzineArticles, GoArticles, iSnare, etc. The great thing about good article sites is that their article pages actually rank highly and send highly qualified traffic. Submit also articles to industry news site.

10. Write reviews

Write and send reviews to your web host, web designer, web developer and SEO. They probably publish it at their site and if you are lucky they link to you as well. Send a review to your favorite sites and have your name and link at the bottom of it.

11. Forum Submissions

Basically, forums are online information exchanges where many people who have an interest in a similar topic will gather to talk online and ask questions.

One thing that is important is that you only use forums that are pretty closely related to your topic. Here are the steps involved in utilizing forums:

1) Find all the forums that pertain to your web site's topic. Go to a search engine and type in your topic and the word 'forum'

2) Go to the first forum. If you have never used a forum before, take a few minutes to get a feel for how it works. Basically, members of the forum will share information and answer questions for each other. There are usually different areas of the forum set up for different specific topics.

3) Become a member of the forum. In the process of signing up, you should have the opportunity to create a personalized signature. A signature is a line or block of text that will appear at the end of every post you make. Include your web site address (preferably your squeeze page address) in your forum.

4) Go the introductions section and introduce yourself.

5) Begin to read through the various forums and begin posting. You can either answer questions people have asked to which you have useful information, or you can offer new information. The key here is that every post you create has a link to your site. When people read your posts, they can click through to your site and join your mailing list. One thing that is important here is that the forums are looking for good quality information and posts, not blatant advertising, in exchange for letting you post your link in the signature area. Don't abuse this, or you will be removed from the forum.

The key with generating traffic with forums is to spend time everyday in all the forums you join. Just like all other forms of traffic generation, this must be an ongoing effort. You cannot simply spend five hours posting to forums one day, and expect to get traffic for the next year.

12. Social network and bookmarking sites

Social bookmarking is another important aspect of search engine marketing. When a user adds a website to their social bookmarking account it is the equivalent to adding a website to their favorites, but with a twist. The difference is that with social bookmarking users can share their list of favorites with everyone else on the internet and even rank their saved bookmarks in the order of popularity.

Submit your site and content to social media outlets such as Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon and other niche social news sharing and bookmarking sites and have some of its link authority flow back to your profile page.

Technorati is the biggest blog search engine, which indexes over 60 millions blogs. Daily. If someone sometimes somewhere mentions your web-site, it will be tracked by Technorati. Watchlists enables you to receive the relevant information via RSS in case someone mentions you in the Blogosphere.

Things to Avoid when buiding links

  • Don't Submit your site to 100+ paid directories (averaging $15 a listing) that send zero traffic to your website.
  • Don't participate in programs that send out emails soliciting people to swap links (link spamming).
  • Be careful about who you link to. Stay out of "bad neighborhoods". Don't submit to FFA (Free for All) sites or join link exchange programs
  • Keep your link directories clean of 404s or dead links.
  • Don't solicit sites that have their reciprocal links pages so deep in the site it's difficult to find. If you have trouble finding the pages, so will the spiders.
  • Never place a link on your own site for the sole purpose of trading link popularity. Only place links that are valuable to your readers. Never try to get low-integrity Web sites to link to you. The link will actually hurt your site, not help it.
  • Don't apply to sites that have hundreds of links on one page.
  • Don't solicit sites that have nothing to do with your business.
  • Don't submit to hundreds or thousands of free directories using bulk submission programs. Many are not quality directories, and most have backlogs of several thousand sites to review. This has worsened, as submitter software allows even more Webmasters to submit their sites. Search Engines now view many free directories as link farms, since the owners have to bulk approve (without review) just to keep up with the large number of submissions they receive every day. Stick to submitting to few quality authority directories and a few targeted niche directories.
  • Don't participate in link popularity farms.

Link farms are networks of heavily cross linked pages on one or more sites, with the sole intention of artificially improving the link popularity of those pages and websites. All of the major search engines consider such linking as spam, so stay clear of these types of links.

Link farms typically give you a page of links to add to your website. The outgoing links point to other link pages belonging to other members of the link farm network. The link titles and descriptions are the same on all the link pages, which makes it easy for a search engine to detect the presence of link spamming.
